Northern Ireland students recognised in global awards programme

Thirteen undergraduate students from Northern Ireland have been recognised in the 2019 Undergraduate Awards Programme.

The students’ papers were selected as among the best from a pool of over 3,400 submissions from 338 institutions in 50 countries.

Congratulating the students on their achievements, the Permanent Secretary at the Department for the Economy, Noel Lavery, said: “The excellent performance of Northern Ireland undergraduate students in this year’s awards is a testament both to the hard work and ability of our students, and the quality of education being delivered by our higher education sector.

“Success in these awards is an outstanding achievement given it is the world’s largest academic awards programme. To receive this recognition is an indication of both excellence and innovation. I am pleased my Department is able to support the awards and celebrate the outstanding undergraduate work of these students. I wish each of them every success in their future careers and I am certain they have the capacity to become future influencers in their chosen fields.”

The following students have been named Regional Winners for the best papers from the island of Ireland in their category:

  • Eve McLelland​ - ​Business - Queen’s University Belfast
  • Niamh Mackin​ – ​Law - Queen’s University Belfast 
  • Eimear Donaghy ​- ​Education - St Mary's University College Belfast

The following students from Northern Irish institutions were Highly Commended for their work:

  • Freddie Finlay​ - ​Social Sciences: Sociology & Social Policy - Queen’s University Belfast

  • Martin McErlean​ - ​Business - Queen’s University Belfast

Dr Garret Maher, Undergraduate Awards Executive Director said: “The Global Undergraduate Awards offers a unique platform for the world’s most inspiring students to benchmark their work at a global scale, and ultimately have this work recognised by an independent panel of judges as being of the highest standard within their discipline. At a time when there is a lot of uncertainty in the world, the Global Undergraduate Summit embraces these students, enabling them to showcase their outstanding research to an audience of peers, academics and future employers, as they transition to be the next generation of change-makers.”

5. The top 10% of papers in each of the 25 categories are Highly Commended, just one paper from each category is named the UA Global Winner and the top papers from each region become Regional Winners.
